Tribute to Guruji and Light on Yoga - Day 9

Stages of Yoga - Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga

The stages of yoga as laid out by Patanjali are done so for the quest of the soul.
Where "the right means are just as important as the end in view."

Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi
These 8 Sanskrit words have much to teach the practitioner of yoga.

Yama - universal and moral commandments
Niyama - individual disciplines
Asana - postures
Pranayama - rhythmic control of the breath
Pratyahara - withdrawal of the senses
Dharana - concentration
Dhyana - meditation
Samadhi - state of super-consciousness brought about my profound meditation

Mr. Iyengar writes that Yama and Niyama help control the yogi's passions and emotions and keep him in harmony with those around him.

Asana - keep the body healthy and strong and in harmony with nature.
These three are the outward quest.

Pranayama and pratyahara help regulate breathing and control of the mind.  Inner quest when awareness is on the breath and release of senses from desires.

Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi - one goes to the inner most recesses of the soul.

Meditation is when the knower, the knowledge and the known become one.

Namaste.
