Santosa means contentment. Contentment means being happy with life as it is right now and not feeling you are lacking anything.
It begins of course with the mind which needs to be cultivated. Mr. Iyengar writes, "Contentment and tranquillity are states of mind." A very clear sentence and something we see if day to day life. How are some people happy with so little and some who have what seems like everything be discontented? It is their state of mind.
In Light on Yoga, Mr. Iyengar talks about conscious and unconscious conflicts. If the mind is conflicted one cannot be at peace and calm the mind to a steady state.
Notice today times when you feel content and discontent. What other feelings and sensations arise during those times. See if you can find a way to be a peace with any discord and bring evenness back to the body, breath and mind.
Namaste.
