It is with much sadness that I am writing about the death of Geeta Iyengar.  She is the eldest daughter of B.K.S. Iyengar and had just finished teaching, along with Prashant  to 1300 people in Pune for the Centenary Celebration for Guruji.

She was an amazing teacher and yogi and devoted her life to the teachings of yoga and B.K.S. Iyengar.

I was fortunate to be taught by Geeta both times that I have gone to Pune. The first time she had not been teaching for awhile because she had been ill, but the first day in the yoga hall she came in and taught the whole month.  We were so lucky and her classes were always wonderful.  Her sequencing, detail and eye to see and help students was amazing.  They were challenging not just physically, but mentally made us let go of any fear we might have and just give a little bit more.

Going to the institute this past November I was not sure if she would be teaching or not.  I knew she had been very ill but had recovered quite a bit and had been teaching.  I had read posts where she was saying she may not be around very long, but again when we got there she was on fire with her teaching, in good spirits and worked with many students and teachers to make sure we were getting what she wanted us to know.

I was hoping she would be there with Prashant the next time I go back.  I was initially quite shocked to read she had died as I had heard she was amazing during the 12 days of teaching and celebration.  Then remembered that she had been telling us, trying to prepare us and I do feel she left, just like Guruji, thinking she has prepared us the best she could and now it is up to us.

The whole month in Pune we were told by each and every teacher we must practice more.  We didn't need more of this or that...but that we needed to be more sincere and honest in our practice.

With much love and gratitude Geeta for all that you have done for me and the Iyengar yoga community.

Om shanti, shanti, shanti...
