Tribute to Guruji and Light on Yoga - Day 36

Part II of Light on Yoga is titled "Yogasanas, bandha and kriya"

There is a few pages of hints and cautions for the practice of asana.

Mr. Iyengar begins with the requisites writing that, "Without the practice of the principles of yama and niyama, which lay down firm foundations for building character, there cannot be an integrated personality.  Practice of asana without the backing of yama and niyama is mere acrobatics."

He also states that, "The qualities demanded from an aspirant are discipline, faith, tenacity and perseverance to practise regularly without interruption."

That right there lets you know you are embarking on something much greater and more demanding than just a quick workout.

Other things to consider:
Cleanliness and food - practice with empty bladder and bowels
Bathing -  to refresh the body and mind
Food - asana done on empty stomach.  Allow four hours after a heavy meal and can eat 30min. after a practice.
Time - best time is either early in the morning or late in evening.  Morning mind is fresh even if body a bit stiff. Evening body may be more free so helps remove fatigue of the day.
Sun - Do not practice if have been out in hot sun
Place - clean, airy and bug free
Cautions - no strain in eyes, facial muscles, ears or breath

Some other recommendations include keeping eyes open at beginning so can see body alignment and the use of mirror to observe certain poses to watch placement of body.

Mr. Iyengar also includes suggestions for dizziness, blood pressure, eye or ear issues.
For women there is also some special provisions during menstruation, pregnancy and after delivery.

The effects of asanas - Mr. Iyengar writes:
Faulty practice causes discomfort and uneasiness.  The right method brings lightness and an exhilarating feeling in the body and mind and continuous practice will change the outlook of the practitioner.

Happy Practicing!

Namaste.
