Reflections on Workshop with Eyal Shifroni

In early June I travelled to Calgary, Albert where Senior Iyengar Teacher Eyal Shifroni was leading a 4 day workshop.  Although tired after many hours of driving yoga has a way of refreshing the body and mind.  Yoga, when practiced properly can rejuvenate and recuperate the body and mind in a way that you realize you have more inside you to give then you expected and it comes out not as depleting you but actually with a sense of feeling so much better.

I also want to say thank you to the Calgary Iyengar Community who arranged this workshop.  Bringing in teachers from other countries to teach is no easy task and from last few workshops I have attended they have done an amazing job.  Really every workshop I have attended in different cities have always been so great.  How the communities come together to help out is really wonderful to see.  There is often a lot of prop hauling :)

Eyal has such grace in demonstrating and teaching the asanas.  He asked us to think and reflect on over the 4 days - Why do yoga?  and What does progression in yoga mean?

I ask you to consider this too as it good to think about.  I feel my answer 24 years ago when I first started would be a little different then it is today.  But even saying that I knew there was more to yoga then just exercise, if not I would have just stayed with the aerobic classes I was doing and teaching.

It is difficult to distill down 4 days into a post and I am still going through my notes and reflecting on what I learned even now.  Here are a few photos from the workshop.  I hope as I continue to learn and develop that I am able to bring some of these and the many teachings I receive into my classes.

Just a few of us from the workshop - the Monday group :)
There were many more from Friday to Sunday.

Namaste.

My New Yoga Prop - Yoga Horse

So excited to have just purchased a Yoga Horse or also known as the trestle...I was calling it a tressler for a few years so not sure if that's a thing too:)  Just looked it up and yup it is :)

I wanted to share a few photos and tell you a bit about this prop and if you live around here invite you to come for a lesson and try it!

I was a bit hesitant about getting it as it is a bit large, but I can already feel where it has helped me realign and adjust in some of my poses.  And a quote here from Mr. Iyengar, "The Body is your temple. Keep it pure and clean for the soul to reside in."

History of the Yoga Horse:
There is not much information about why Mr. Iyengar decided to design this prop for use but I did read that he had seen a bar attached to a wall and started using it for some poses and found it helped with aligning the back more.  Because the feet were slipping though he added the legs.

A prop itself is not always needed, but can be so useful in getting feedback and help with correct alignment, so that when you move away from the prop that intelligence stays with you .

This prop can help when pregnant as it gives support so a mother does not overdo and really helps allow more space to come to the lower abdomen.  Baby is happy with more space :).

If infirm or over coming an injury or illness the horse helps give It also is good if injured stability.

Really all the props were designed to make yoga accessible to all.

Here is a great post by Marla Apt on the use of props:

Here are a few photos of some poses I was practicing.
