Finding time..

Seems even during a week break from school and other activities that things don't really slow down.
This is a constant remember for me to take a few moments each morning, no matter how busy the day, to put in perspective what is needed to be first today and to go into it with a loving heart.

Healing Power of the Positive Mind

We have just been gifted with some Shambhala Sun magazines. Without looking at the date and reading them I would not have known that they were written almost 17 years ago because much, if not all of the writings are still very relevant today.

One article that caught my eye was "The Healing Power of the Positive Mind", by Tulku Thondup Rinpoche in the November 1996 edition.

He writes," If we habitually dwell on and struggle with the negative side of our situation, our whole mentality, perception and experience will inexorably become negative, constantly thinking and talking about how awful or painful it is, makes even minor problems insurmountably big and solid like a mountain, sharp like a knife, and dark as night."

I'm sure we can all relate to this. If our attitude is negative to begin, then everything will seem like a problem.  So it is best to try and see the positive aspect of a circumstance, even ones that appear negative.

Tulku Thondup Rinpoche also writes though that if we do have a negative thought or feeling, "it is important to be gentle with ourselves."

Instead of making the situation worse by beating ourselves up because of our play in the problem, better to redirect the mind from the negative cycle to the correct path.

Come back to the breath.

Then know that, "strong positive energy can prevent or ease suffering." and that "the most significant result of a positive attitude is not necessarily to keep suffering from happening, but to keep it from becoming a negative and painful force when it does come."

Of course all of this is easy to say when we are calm and collected, but as this article reminds us, it is better to make friends with your problems, ask these difficult emotions what they want so that you can relax and stop grasping and find a solution.

"When we no longer are so concerned about having to protect and cling to the self, suffering becomes a means of realizing peace and happiness."

More on the Breath

I found this in my notes dated March 25, 2003.

I do not know which book it is from. I do know it is probably not my own words, as I do not write this eloquently.

But, here it is...seemed to fit with many other things I have been reading and re-reading lately about the importance of the breath.

Much attention is given to the quality of our breath during practice because of the enormous role it plays.
The breath is not only essential in the cultivation of prana (the ability of our body to extract and acquire energy from the air), but it also grounds out nervous system and supports our balance and focus.
Any imbalance in the breathing mechanism reduces our ability to gain prana from the breath and thus weakens our yoga practice. Strength of the lungs is directly linked to the strength of the adrenal glands.

Enjoy the breath!

Celebrate Life

This little exercise below is from, The Tibetan Yoga of Breath: Breathing Practices for Healing the Body and Cultivation Wisdom.  It is by Anyen Rinpoche & Allison Choying Zangmo.

It is my current book choice for a book review, so please see that blog or page for more about this great book.

Exercise 11 in How to Practice Breath Yoga:

At the end of your wind energy training, spend a few moments using the breath to channel this attitude of rejoicing.

P.87 says, "As you inhale, you can think, "How fortunate! My life lasted long enough to take this breath." As you exhale, you can think, "May I use the remainder of my life wisely.""

Celebrate Life, and rejoice that you have lived another day!

The Requisites

From BKS Iyengar's, Light on Yoga:

The Requisites
1. Without firm foundations a house cannot stand. Without the practice of the principles of Yama and niyama, which lay down firm foundations for building character, there cannot be an integrated personality. Practice of asanas without the backing of Yama and niyama is mere acrobatics.

2. The qualities demanded from an aspirant are discipline, faith, tenacity and perseverance to practice regularity without interruptions.
