Reflections on IYAC/ACYI 2015 AGM and Conference

Last week I was fortunate to be able to attend the annual IYAC/ACYI AGM and conference in Vancouver where long time student of B.K.S. Iyengar, Zubin Zarthoshtimanesh came to teach.

The classes were full of a mix of theory with movement - bringing the action and awareness of the teachings into our own bodies.  Zubin is very articulate in explaining a point and made sure we understood the importance of the teachings.  Zubin would call us to the front to ensure we SAW what he was explaining and then try in our own bodies.

One might wonder what is the point of that?

Right from the beginning it was to show the integration in each pose.  Zubin mentioned a few times how we now have an asana class, a pranayama class a  meditation class, etc. but B.K.S. brought this into each and every pose.  Once he mastered asanas he didn't stop doing and just work on the breath and then stop doing and begin meditation. He integrated each limb of yoga into his life.

The physical body allows us to bring the awareness and consciousness from the skin to the muscles to the nerves to the very core of our being. They allow us to access different parts of the body.

So, upon my return I have much to continue to digest into my own practice and I hope one day can share in my classes the same brilliant way Zubin was able to in Vancouver.

Yoga - Living life with dignity and poise

"Practicing yoga does not eliminate life's challenges, and neither does it provide us with a convenient trap-door to escape from life's distractions. Instead, Yoga gives us the skills to meet life head-on with dignity and poise."

- Donna Farhi, Bringing Yoga to Life

Today set aside 15 minutes to sit quietly and follow the breath. Let go of the desire to be anybody but your self, or be doing anything but what you are doing at this moment. When we release that outer body that is in constant contact with the worldly distractions and desires and move inward we begin to see a shift and find that at this moment everything is all right in our world right now.

As you start to come back to the world keep that open attitude that life is precious, we are precious and find joy in each moment you have.

Restore and Rejuvenate from the Core

During this spring session I am offering two 4-week workshop classes.
The first I created is called Restore From the Core and then starting in May - Rejuvenate From Within.

I went into preparing for these workshops from the basis that most of us are living such stressful lives that we all could use an hour or two break each week.  Giving yourself that permission to pause and recuperate really is a first step in saying you are worth that self care. After giving so much of ourselves to family, friends and work to give time to ourselves is important.

From that I realized I wanted the workshops to be something more then just that break one evening a week so I have included email reminders throughout each week.  Some are a reflection of what was taught or a reminder to take a few minutes each day for yourself, without guilt or a need to justify.  Benefitting your own body, breath and mind state can only be positive for those around you. They will feel the calmness you are radiating and possibly feel calm also in your presence.

In sharing this I have to say it has been a great reminder to myself to stop, breath, stay present and reflect on the beauty that is around me. I feel so very grateful to have the many people in my life helping me to stay on this path!

Namaste!
