Tribute to Guruji and Light on Yoga - Day 38
In appendix i in Light on Yoga Mr. Iyengar gives an asana course that is divided into primary, intermediate and advanced courses to take about 300 weeks.
The first course is from week 1-30, the second course from week 31-73. Weeks 74-78 you are to repeat all the asana from course one and two. Course three is from week 79-300. Many times you are given the same sequence for over 6-7 weeks. Mr. Iyengar also lays out practices from the first to seventh day of the week. He also gives a list of important asana at the end of each course that one can practice according to one's physical and mental capacities.
Very well thought out and organized!
Mr. Iyengar does write in an article on the 300 week course:
"I realised that it is very difficult for anyone to learn what I have given in Light on Yoga in 300 weeks. As I learnt to do these with allegiance in three years, I thought others would take six years but now I see if may take twelve years or even twelve lives!"
Mr. Iyengar also writes, "Practice of asana is meant to sharpen the intelligence of the body, and when that intelligence is sharpened, then he may be able to make sequences for his daily practice."
